A local Black Lives Matter activist has started an online petition to have the statue of Gen George Armstrong Custer removed from its' place in downtown Monroe, MI. According to the Toledo Blade KatyBeth Davis said "This statue represents a man who was glorified [for the] mass genocide of Native Americans," she wrote in the change.org petition directed at the city of Monroe. "...By taking this statue down it will give the community a sense of change and hope for the future of future... We want our kids to grow up safe, happy, healthy, and unafraid to die."

An opposing petition has been started expressing support for the fight against racism but not for the removal of the statue. The statue was originally dedicated in 1910 by then President William Howard Taft.
