What Does Monday Bring To Toledo After A Violent Saturday?

Saturday afternoon in Toledo began with two peaceful protests-rallies both attended by Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz. The first near Central-Secor area broke up without incident and many of those people headed downtown for a rally at the safety building. That rally also took place peacefully with speeches from local community leaders including Monday's guest on my show Julian Mack. Mr Mack is active in the Black Lives Matter movement here and is part of the CSRN, Community Solidarity Response Network. Again the crowd was boisterous but peaceful and began to break up following the speeches.

What happened next is a question we will try to answer on the show. Windows began to be broken in downtown businesses, police were using paint ball guns, tear gas and wooden bullets on crowds of protesters. Some groups were throwing bottles at the police and destroying property. At one point in the evening the Target store on Alexis, miles from the downtown area, became the target of looters.

The Mayor put a curfew on the city, and on Sunday Franklin Park Mall was closed for fear of further attacks. Here is how it was covered in the media.

Target and CVS said Sunday that they are temporarily closing certain locations, including some that were damaged during protests over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis last week- Toledo Blade

Lt. Kellie Lenhardt, spokesman for TPD, said multiple buildings downtown were vandalized, including the Lucas County Courthouse, the Huntington Center, the Ohio Building, and a bank. A number of cars were also damaged.- Toledo Blade

Toledo Police arrested ten people on Saturday after protests calling for police accountability and racial justice turned violent.

The charges include aggravated rioting, aggravated robbery, breaking and entering, failure to disperse, resisting arrest, and failure to comply.

Of the nine black men and one white woman, only one was not from Toledo.- Toledo 11

Monday at 7a I will speak with Julian Mack one of the organizers of Saturday's rallies.
