The city of Toledo pulled out all the stops today to mark the 100th anniversary of the Willard-Dempsey heavyweight championship fight which took place on this date in 1919. Local boxing clubs were on site with amateur rounds being fought, along with exhibitions on training, footwork, and exercise. The crowd had numerous food trucks to choose from and displays from the local gyms about how kids could get into the sweet science of boxing.
At 6p two local men played the parts of Jess Willard and Jack Dempsey and and recreated the brutal fight at which Dempsey the challenger knocked Willard down numerous times in the first round alone. The fight lasted only three rounds when Willard could not answer the bell for the fourth.
