An Arizona inmate's escape attempt turned into a bizarre incident at a Phoenix hospital on Wednesday (July 1). The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office reported that a female inmate attempted to flee custody while receiving treatment at Valleywise Health Medical Center.

According to officials, the inmate asked to use the restroom and then tried to escape by climbing into the ceiling. However, her plan went awry as she became stuck between two walls. Firefighters had to open the wall to rescue her, and she was subsequently checked for injuries.

The sheriff's office has not disclosed the inmate's name or the charges she faces. The incident is currently under investigation by Jail Crimes detectives.

Valleywise Health Medical Center emphasized the importance of safety and security for patients, employees, and visitors. In a statement, they noted that their emergency preparedness and security protocols were effectively activated during the incident, allowing for a swift and safe resolution.

The hospital expressed gratitude for the prompt response and cooperation of law enforcement and first responders.

The inmate's failed escape attempt highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in maintaining security during medical visits. The investigation will seek to determine how far the inmate managed to progress before getting stuck and assess any potential procedural improvements.
