Pete Buttigieg is suggesting a mileage tax to replace the federal fuel tax to pay for roadway maintenance construction. He made the suggestion in an interview on March 26. As the Biden Transportation Secretary Buttigieg's comment carry some weight and Buttigieg believe the replacement funding source would offset losses incurred by use of more fuel efficient vehicles. Some states are also exploring the tax including Ohio with received a $2 million federal grant to explore ways to create long term funding for the Highway Trust Fund.
