Riverside Hospital Undergoing Demolition

(Toledo, OH) Work is underway to raze the former Riverside Hospital in Toledo.

A wrecking ball is taking swings at the former hospital site along Summit Street, drawing a crowd of neighbors Wednesday to watch the work. The long-vacant, 120-year old hospital near I-280 is being demolished by Toledo Public Schools, which renovated one of the campus buildings to house its central administrative offices.

A second building contains the YMCA's administrative offices, Head Start, a day care, and other nonprofits. But TPS will pay nearly $1 million to demolish the only building left vacant and transform the land into greenspace. The district bought the site in 2004 for $750,000.

There's no word how long the demolition and clean-up will take.
