(Toledo, OH) The Better Business Bureau is warning about a new tech-support scam.
The BBB is urging caution when you go on line to get help with your account from a big company like Netflix, Microsoft, or Amazon. Scammers are posting fake tech-support numbers online, hoping to fool customers into calling them instead.
A quick search may turn up what looks like a legit toll-free 800 number, so when you dial it a "representative" answers. That rep claims your account has been hacked and they have proof-- but first, they need remote access to your computer.
That, of course, opens you up to the risk of identity theft. The scam artist then installs malware directly, which records passwords and hunts for personal info.
