FirstEnergy Offering 600 Employees Buyouts

(Cleveland, OH)  FirstEnergy is offering early retirement packages to nearly 600 support staff.

Company officials will know by Monday how many will accept it.  The employees all work for a subsidiary called FirstEnergy Service Company.  It was created in 2001 to provide legal, financial and communications services for the corporation's far-flung divisions.

FirstEnergy previously announced plans to exit its competitive businesses, including its coal-fired plants and nuclear power plants, and become a fully-regulated utility again.

It's unclear whether any Toledo Edison workers will be affected by the offers.
