Heat Wave Already Canceling Fireworks Displays

(Springfield Twp., OH) This weekend's expected heat wave already is having an effect on holiday events.

Swanton village officials have decided to postpone that community's annual July 4th fireworks display Saturday evening, citing safety reasons.

The Springfield Township Freedom Celebration is also canceled Saturday, because of a projected heat index near 110 degrees. There's no new date announced yet for either event.

But a new holiday celebration in Sylvania  gets underway today. Mayberry Days is a week-long series of events at Mayberry Square leading up to Sylvania's annual Star-Spangled Celebration across the street at Centennial Terrace.

Those family-friendly events kick off today with an evening princess party, where kids can meet their favorite Disney princesses. Friday features a music night, which is followed by a two-day art and craft festival and  Mayberry Square Mutt Strutt. Saturday is also Heroes Day, honoring firefighters, police, and military veterans.

Monday brings the annual car show at the shopping complex, followed by the evening fireworks celebration featuring music and food the night before Independence Day.
