(Toledo, OH) A Toledo city councilman wants to expand the opportunities for voter registration.
Toledo City Council will get its first look today at legislation that would allow Toledo residents to register to vote while paying a water bill or doing business in municipal court. Council member Nick Komives wants to give voters more chances to register in direct response to a recent Supreme Court decision which sided with Ohio's efforts to de-register voters for not showing up at the polls.
The councilman contends most people don't even know they've been purged from the state's rolls.
But voter turnout has been poor at best in recent primaries-- 14 percent in May and only 13-and-a-half percent for last September's primary during races for Toledo mayor and city council.
