Deadline Extended For St. Anthony Church Decision

(Toledo, OH)  A decision on the fate of Toledo's St. Anthony Church could be made within a week.

The bishop of the Toledo Catholic Diocese gave the Lucas County Land Bank a two-week window Tuesday to inspect the church before deciding whether to take the property.

Officials say a thorough inspection of the nearly 130-year-old building could be completed by the end of this week.  The land bank will then make the call next week whether to preserve the building or allow for its demolition.

The diocese is offering to donate the St. Anthony Church property to public officials, while holding Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur to an earlier pledge to pay $70,000 toward removal of demolition equipment from the site. Toledo's mayor also took part in the latest round of preservation talks.
