Bishop, City Leaders Discuss Saving Historic Church

(Toledo, OH)  Plans are in the works to save an historic Toledo church.

Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur and Bishop Daniel Thomas met Tuesday to devise a plan to keep St. Anthony Church standing.

The bishop wants local leaders to reimburse the demolition company for the costs of breaking the contract in exchange for the Diocese of Toledo giving the property to the city.

The decision would be up to Toledo officials whether the property becomes a community center, as originally planned, or is set aside for another redevelopment project. The iconic church has set empty since 2005, when the diocese closed the parish due to declining attendance.
