Toledo Bishop accepts proposal to save St. Andrews

Toledo Bishop Daniel Thomas has accepted the proposal of Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz and Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur to turn over St. Andrews Church to a new occupant, but has sent some conditions on the deal.

In a statement released after this mornings meeting between the three groups, the Toledo Catholic Diocese says it is willing to hand over the property to Kaptur and Kapszukiewicz, to which they would decide who would get the property next: the Padua Center, the City of Toledo, or the Lucas County Land Bank.

Congresswoman Kaptur has put up $7000 to help pay off the demolition firm that had been contracted to tear the church down. Bishop Thomas is seeking some additional funding from the city to help cover those costs, including the cost of breaking the deal to complete the teardown.

The Diocese have set a Thursday deadline on a response to the plan from Kaptur and Kapszukiewicz.
