Bishop To Meet City Leaders Over Church's Fate

(Toledo, OH)   The fate of Toledo's St. Anthony Church will be the subject of a meeting today.

Bishop Daniel Thomas is scheduled to meet with Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz and Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur to discuss the planned demolition of the nearly 130-year-old building.

City officials slapped a stop work order on the project this past weekend, citing code and permit problems.  St. Anthony closed in 2005 because of declining membership.

The Toledo Catholic diocese had planned to tear down the abandoned church and turn the land over to a nonprofit community agency already operating out of a former priest's residence.

But the mayor and congresswoman are among public officials who want to preserve the historic church, but have offered no plan yet for its re-use.
