$800,000 Need for Cleanup at Former Foundry Site

(Toledo, OH) Toledo's mayor wants to spend $800,000 to clean up a former foundry.

Toledo City Council will get its first look at legislation today to spend capital improvement money to clean up and close the former Unitcast Foundry along East Broadway.

The city owns the 26-acre site and has under an Ohio EPA order for a decade to remediate the property. The state EPA has granted a third and final extension to complete the work by the end of 2019.

Talks with a metal recovery company to do the work fell apart last year when the salvage metal market collapsed, so Toledo taxpayers are on the hook for the clean-up and closure of the East Toledo site.
