(Toledo, OH) A Toledo-based program to help homeless veterans is expanding in Ohio.
Veterans Matter provides apartment deposits to help homeless vets land a home and even pay the first-month’s rent if necessary while vets await rent vouchers through a federal HUD program.
The program that started six years ago to help 35 Toledo veterans now has served more than 2,100 military personnel in Toledo, Dayton and Cincinnati. But a University of Toledo fundraiser this spring raised enough money to expand the service to Cleveland and Columbus.
About 40,000 U.S. veterans are homeless, with about 800 in Ohio.
