(Toledo, OH) Lucas County residents will be able to text 911 within the coming weeks.
A new software is in place in Lucas County that will allow dispatchers to receive the text messages for emergencies. Once the system is operational, text messages will pop up on the same screens where dispatchers see 911 calls.
Dispatchers will even be able to respond, and hold a conversation by text message. Lucas County commissioners say they'll use the money from the 911 tax levy to pay for the technology.
Dispatchers say when the new system is up-and-running that residents are still better off calling 911 than texting.
