(Toledo, OH) Despite opposition, Lucas County commissioners take the next step toward a new jail.
The new Lucas County lock-up won't be in downtown Toledo, as an opposition group has suggested.
County commissioners have voted to spend about a million dollars on seven properties in North Toledo for a new county jail neighbors don't want. The site topped a list compiled a few years ago-- and only recently came back on the market.
There could be competing ballot issues in November, as county commissioners plan to put a new tax on the ballot to pay for jail construction. But opponents plan to gather signatures for a voter referendum to force a downtown location to be decided at the ballot box instead.
