Construction Underway on Controversial Kroger Site

(Toledo, OH) Construction on a once-controversial Kroger superstore is underway in West Toledo.

The Sisters of Notre Dame have moved out, now living at a new center in Whitehouse. So demolition work is proceeding this spring on the 18-acre property at Monroe and Secor, one of the city's busiest intersections.

The Sisters of Notre Dame have had no contact with Kroger since selling the site this time last year.

The Toledo plan commission shot down the proposal for rezoning to build a Kroger Marketplace store, but city council reversed course and allowed plans to proceed.

Kroger has since revised those plans to incorporate suggestions from opponents, such as setbacks and sidewalks to allow for better traffic flow in the area for vehicles and pedestrians alike. There's no word yet on when the grocery superstore will open.
