Group Proposes Ballot Issue To Keep Jail Downtown

(Toledo, OH)  People who want the new Lucas County Jail to be built in downtown Toledo may ask voters to guarantee the site.

A group called Keep the Jail Downtown says they're considering a petition to force construction of a new jail in the civic center mall area. The group's leaders say the jail doesn't belong on Detroit Avenue because it's too close to homes and too far from other criminal justice services.

Lucas County commissioners say, however, a downtown jail is too expensive, citing a study that building a new downtown lock-up would cost $25 million more than current plans.

Voters will be asked to pass a tax issue in November to pay for the  jail's construction.
