Ohio EPA to Host Public Hearing on Dredging

(Toledo, OH) What happens in the Toledo harbor is the topic of a public hearing tonight.

The Ohio EPA wants public input about a proposal to dredge the shipping channel near the Toledo Harbor lighthouse.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is proposing to scoop up to 800,000 cubic yards of silt and dump it in the open waters of northern Maumee Bay about three-and-a-half miles away. That amount of silt is enough to fill Toledo's tallest skyscraper three times.

Last year, a good portion of that silt was dumped in a confined disposal facility in agreement with the port authority. The public hearing starts at 6 p.m. at One Government Center.
