Davis-Besse to Shut Down in 2020

(Oak Harbor) First Energy is getting out of the nuclear power business.

Plans are in the works to shut down the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Plant.  FirstEnergy announced plans Wednesday to deactivate the Ottawa County plant by 2020, citing rising operating costs.

The closure will have a devastating impact on the economy, with more than 700 job losses and millions of tax dollars gone when the nuclear facility closes.

Benton-Carroll-Salem schools depended on the nuclear plant for at least four-and-a-half million dollars per year in tax revenue, but district leaders have placed two levies on the May ballot, hoping to make up the difference.

Davis-Besse just went back on-line this week, following a routine refueling-and-maintenance outage that lasted three weeks.
