Minority Groups Pan Plan to Abolish Commissions

(Toledo, OH) Toledo City Council could get an earful over a proposal to abolish two city commissions.

Toledo's mayor wants to wipe out the Board of Community Relations and the city's Youth Commission.

Youth activities would be transferred to the parks and recreation division, and BCR would be replaced by a new Human Relations Commission-- but without an executive director. The mayor's staff would lead that commission's activities instead.

Minority leaders are up in arms over the proposal, claiming it strips the city of a citizen-driven board with an independent voice.

Latino and African-American leaders are expected to address their complaints and the potential controversy at a city council committee hearing tonight at 6 p.m. at One Government Center.
