Toledo Serial Killer Facing Release From Prison

(Toledo, OH) A Toledo serial killer could soon become a free man.

Nathaniel Cook's 20-year sentence for killing nine people in the 1980s is scheduled to end today.

Lucas County court officials say Cook won't just be turned out into the street.  His public defender must apply for judicial release and then undergo a competency exam, which would take several weeks.

The Lucas County prosecutor says the plea deal was the best available at the time to learn what happened to the victims and offer closure to their families.

The victim's families say they agreed to the plea deal in the late 1990's, admitting they never thought they'd see the day Nathaniel Cook ever got out of jail. His brother will spend the rest of his life behind bars for the killing spree.
