(Toledo, OH) The University of Toledo will host the 17th annual MLK Unity Day observance, which runs 9 to 11 a..m at U-T’s Savage Arena in honor of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior.
The event also will include performances by U-T student Jalen Welborn, the Toledo School for the Arts, the Scott High School Marching Band, and the United Vision Baptist Church Choir. Scholarships also will be presented.
Speakers will include Toledo's mayor, the University of Toledo president, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, and Romules Durant, Toledo public schools superintendent. A free community lunch will follow the celebration.
Owens Community College will celebrate the MLK holiday with a day of service. Students, faculty, and staff will volunteer at the Cherry Street Mission and Bethany House shelters, providing cleaning services at both locations. Many schools, businesses, and nonprofit groups have turned toward a day of community service to celebrate the civil rights leader’s legacy.
Lourdes University will host a morning Mass related to the MLK holiday. Prayers for peace, justice, and racial harmony will be offered during the service, which begins at 8:30 this morning at Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel, which is located on the school’s Sylvania campus.
