(Columbus, OH) Congressman Jim Renacci is dropping out of the Ohio governor's race to run for the U.S. Senate.
The Akron-area Republican will announce today his candidacy for the Senate seat held by Sherrod Brown, who just reported a campaign war chest of over $10 million.
Renacci is stepping in for Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel, who quit the race to focus on his wife's health issues. He'll face Cleveland banker Mike Gibbons in the primary.
Representatives for President Trump are reported to have asked the Republican representative to run for the U.S. Senate seat. Renacci had said that was the only way he'd consider dropping out of the race for Ohio governor.
