Iconic RR Bridge to Be Demolished in 2018

(Maumee, OH) An iconic bridge may be coming down next year.

A rusty railroad span that runs alongside the Ohio Turnpike over the Maumee River is slated for demolition next year, despite being eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Wood County port authority proposes to remove the bridge previously owned by CSX Railroad, claiming its now deteriorating. The bridge was originally hoped to connect the Chessie Circle Trail bike path project between Lucas and Wood counties.

But the iconic bridge is in bad enough shape that a number of historic preservation groups have signed off on a six-month demolition plan in 2018, as long as a historical marker is placed at the site and parts of the bridge are preserved for possible reuse.
