(Cleveland, OH) The state attorney general's office is filing a lawsuit to stop a nonprofit it says has bilked Ohioans out of $4.2 million.
Attorney General Mike DeWine says the organization Cops for Kids is soliciting people by phone, claiming the proceeds go to buy teddy bears for children impacted by traumatizing events. DeWine says only 80 cents of every 100 dollars donated to the Ashtabula-based organization went to charity.
DeWine says his office is trying to get a court order for the charity to stop operating, and is trying to recover as much money as possible for it go for the purposes intended.
