(Toledo, OH) The recent heat wave in northwest Ohio is being blamed for a growing algal bloom on the Maumee River.
There are aerial pictures circulating on social media that show a river so green it looks like grass along Promenade Park.
But researchers say the bright green ribbon in the Maumee River along downtown Toledo will likely remain until rainfall flushes the algae bloom into Lake Erie. Despite the ugly look of the bloom, experts don't believe it will make the already large bloom in Lake Erie any worse.
Meantime, people are reminded to avoid swimming in the river, but fish taken from the water should be safe because they swim under the algae.
