(Swanton Twp., OH) The 180th fighter wing will mark the 9-11 attacks anniversary with a new memorial dedication.
The September 11th terrorist attacks changed the mission of the 180th, which saw increased homeland security duties as a result of the events 16 years ago. While the Northwest Ohio 9/11 Memorial is dedicated to those who lost their lives during the September 11th terrorist attacks, the new memorial also serves as a reminder to fighter pilots and everyone else there to never lose sight of that mission.
The new memorial includes a beam from the World Trade Center, limestone from the Pentagon, and soil from the Pennsylvania field where Flight 93 went down. All three items are encased in a clock with a glass ingot for each person killed in the 9-11 attacks.
The invitation-only dedication ceremony starts at 10 a.m. with remarks from the 180th commander.
