(Toledo, OH) A candidate for Toledo mayor wants the Metroparks to take over some of the city's greenspace.
Democratic candidate Wade Kapsukiewicz is proposing to take Ottawa Park and other city parks and turn over control to the Toledo Area Metroparks. That's a cost-saving idea first floated eight years ago by a coalition of independent city council candidates that called themselves Teamwork Toledo.
While Kapsukiewicz calls it a "partnership" with the Metroparks, opponents may see the proposal as cost-shifting, as the mowing and maintenance of such city parks would be transferred to an agency that receives levy funding from Lucas County taxpayers.
The unendorsed Democrat also proposes to increase public access to Lake Erie throiugh the creation of a 150-acre park on Grassy Island near Point Place.
