COLUMBUS, Ohio - One person is dead and seven other are injured after a ride malfunctioned at the Ohio State Fair.
Five of the injured are listed in critical condition. Two others were treated for minor injuries.
The accident occurred when a row of seats on the Fire Ball ride became detached, sending riders flying as many as 20 to 30 feet through the air. Officials from the Ohio Department of Agriculture, who are responsible for inspecting rides like this, said there were no red flags during the assembly of the Fire Ball. The ride was inspected multiple times during its construction and had been signed off on this morning.
All rides at the Fair have been shut down until further notice.
Governor John Kasich released a statement Wednesday night:
“I am terribly saddened by this accident, by the loss of life and that people were injured enjoying Ohio's fair. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those grieving and injured. I have ordered a full investigation into this incident and have ordered that all fair rides be shut down until additional safety inspections can be completed."
