Governor Signs EPA Funding & Lake Erie Measure

(Cleveland, OH) A new state law is expected to help improve protections for Lake Erie.

Governor John Kasich signed Senate Bill 2 Tuesday, giving the Ohio EPA more power to oversee lake cleanup efforts.

The measure also continues a pledge to reduce phosphorous runoff by 40-percent to help eliminate toxic algal blooms on Lake Erie. The bill also encourages better use of dredge materials and ensures the proper disposal of construction debris.

The bill was inspired by a toxic algae bloom in Lake Erie that tainted Toledo’s drinking water in the summer of 2014.
