Perrysburg to Consider Chicken Zoning Compromise

(Perrysburg, OH) Perrysburg leaders are doing a bit of a "chicken dance" these days.

Perrysburg City Council will consider a zoning proposal next week that "grandfathers" chickens already being kept in that community by bird owners.

But city leaders already are clucking about the possibility of having to register those chickens and what process would be used, including banding them.

The existing agricultural zoning law won't allow chickens in Perrysburg, so the owner of some backyard egg-layers has been playing a game of chicken with city leaders for several months-- keeping hens named Sage, Clementine, and Marge, while trying to convince them to change the city zoning code so she won't run "afowl" of existing law.
