Bizarre NW Ohio Murder Case to Be Retried

(Defiance, OH) A Defiance County woman is back in a Northwest Ohio prison to await a new murder trial in a bizarre case.

Bond is set at $3 million for 50-year old Judith Hawkey, who won an appeal of her 2013 murder conviction and resulting life sentence. Hawkey had been in state prison, but was recently transferred to the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio while her case is pending-- and a new trial set for February.

A jury convicted Hawkey in 2013 of murder, endangering children and insurance fraud for ordering her then-10-year old stepson to fatally shoot his father. Her husband's 2003 death was originally labeled an accident, but a decade later, her stepson recanted that story. But an appeals court ruled her conviction was based almost solely on his witness testimony.
