NW Ohio Grad Student Discovers Galaxy

(Oak Harbor, OH) A Northwest Ohio grad student is being credited for an astronomy discovery..

24-year old Oak Harbor native Adam Smercina  made an out-of-this-world find as a graduate student and research assistant at the University of Michigan.

The 2011 Oak Harbor high school graduate led a team of astronomers who discovered a new dwarf galaxy. The galaxy is slightly larger than the Milky Way and is part of the M-81 group of galaxies. That dwarf galaxy wasn't easy to find-- it orbits another one and is considered a satellit galaxy.

The team's findings were recently published in the well-respected Astrophysical Journal Letters after a peer review.
