(Middle Bass Island, OH) After a $6 million renovation, a stone fortress that once housed a historic winery has reopened on Middle Bass Island.
The Lonz Winery is now part of a state park, where visitors also can find a marina and campsites. The winery building closed after the 2000 collapse of a concrete terrace, killing a man and injuring 75 others.
State government bought the property and tried to find private investors before beginning the renovations three years ago. Visitors can take a weekend jaunt there, but there won't be any wine served until the state finds a private operator to open a restaurant inside the stone building.
