Veteran To Be Buried 75 Years After Death

(Port Clinton, OH) Funeral services are scheduled today for a Port Clinton soldier who died 75 years ago.

Technician Fourth Grade John Kovach, Jr ., died during the Bataan Death March in the Philippines in 1942, the height of World War II. But the remains of the Ohio National Guard soldier went missing for more than 70 years, when those remains were exhumed from a mass grave in 2014 and identified through DNA testing.

Kovach has two sisters in Toledo who helped with that effort. Kovach enlisted with the National Guard's 37th Tank Company in Port Clinton in 1940. He will be buried with full military honors in his hometown this afternoon.
