(Toledo, OH) Toledo's public pools will open as scheduled June 24th. City council passed a funding plan last night that includes some donations.
Independent Sandy Spang cast the lone 'no' vote, calling it an eleventh-hour proposal and a "rehash" of the same plan as last year. Spang took parks and recreation administrators to task for waiting until the last minute without a more comprehensive recreation plan for the city's youth.
But Democrat Larry Sykes countered that it's city council's job as elected officials to ensure that inner-city kids have something to do in the summertime. He also rebuked Toledo's corporate community for giving to such entities as the Toledo Zoo, the Toledo Fair Housing Center, and Lourdes University, but failing to donate each year to the benefit of the city's children.
