Lake Erie Algae Bloom Starting to Form

(Toledo, OH) Environmentalists and researchers are watching closely as a green algae bloom appears to be slowly growing in Lake Erie.

There's a plume of sediment from the Maumee River showing on a new imiage from a NASA satellite-- but it's too early to tell if the bloom will grow to the size of the one that shut down Toledo’s water supply three summers ago.

Plenty of rain and runoff are fueling the bloom, and early hot weather this weekend could add to the green algae already forming. A big bloom could also offset what's supposed to be a good season for walleye and yellow perch fishing in the lake's shallow western basin.
