Fremont HS Senior Banned from Graduation

(Fremont, OH) A Northwest Ohio high school senior gets banned from her own graduation ceremony for decorating her cap.

There was one student missing when 250 Fremont Ross students walked across the graduation stage Sunday. Mikala Bartson was banned from the ceremony because she painted her graduation cap, in violation of school policy against altering graduation attire.

The honor student painted a depiction of a well-known Japanese print displayed at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. Bartson refused to wear a plain cap, even though she knew it would get her back into commencement at Terra State Community College.

The senior called it a "simple way of standing up against a closed-minded school system." Bartson will attend Bowling Green State University and major in speech pathology.
