(Toledo, OH) The Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority is considering a new funding plan to keep buses rolling for the next decade.
The transit agency is proposing a half-cent sales tax that would generate nearly three times as much as a current levy-- or 30-million-dollars-- for operations and road repairs in member communities. The sales tax would appear on a future ballot to replace TARTA's current property tax levy.
But there will be critics of a Lucas County-wide sales tax increase when the current ten-year levy only covers TARTA-member communities. If voters approve, Lucas County's sales tax would approach just under eight percent, one of the highest in the state.
