Scientists Identify Virus In Algal Blooms

(Toledo, OH) A new study finds the cause of the Lake Erie algal bloom that caused Toledo's water crisis.

Bowling Green State University researchers found a virus was released by the algae cells in 2014, causing the toxins to enter the city's water supply. The research shows the virus caused the cells to burst which released the toxins.

The study finds a strong chance of a similar viral outbreak happening in the future unless more is done to prevent algal blooms on Lake Erie.
