No Raises For Toledo Mayor, City Council

(Toledo, OH) Toledo's mayor and city council won't be getting raises this year. Council members voted against proposed salary hikes Tuesday after nearly an hour of debate.

Supporters say increasing the salary for the part-time City Council members would improve the pool of candidates. Some on council believe the pay raise was warranted, because their job has moved to more of a full-time role with 24-7 communication from constituents through social media and email.

Critics say the raises were an issue best left up to Toledo voters. Councilman Rob Ludeman calls his role community service, not a career. He told his colleagues foregoing a pay raise is tantamount to the volunteer part of being a public servant.
