(Toledo, OH) Toledo police are changing tactics in the fight against distracted driving.
Toledo's police chief will announce at a late morning press conference that patrol officers will write a different ticket when they witness texting and driving. That's only a secondary offense, which police chief George Kral says is difficult to prove and cannot be the only purpose for a traffic stop.
Instead, he's instructing police officers to start using the "operation in willful or wanton disregard of the safety of persons or property" code in distracted driving-related traffic stops.
The new charge is a primary offense and still address reckless and careless actions of a driver using a portable digital device while driving.
