Could Ohio Schools See More Private Voucers?

(Columbus, OH) Republican state lawmakers are pushing a plan to expand school vouchers.

There are companion bills in the Ohio House and Senate that would expand private school voucher programs by increasing eligibility-- making it more affordable for local families considering a parochial school education for their kids.

The bills would create an “Opportunity Scholarship Program” allowing eligble K through 8 students a voucher of up to $5,000. High school students could receive up to $7,500.

Families with an income less than 200 percent of the federal poverty level would receive a full scholarship. The threshold is twice that for a partial scholarship. Backers argue the bill improves school choice without increasing taxes.
