(Toledo, OH) Toledo City Council members may give themselves a raise.
City council will open debate today on a proposed salary increase after learning council members in similar-sized cities make nearly double Toledo's $27,500 yearly salary. The proposal calls for a raise to more than $31,000 per year.
City Council is considered a part-time job, but members are on call around the clock via mobile phone and social media. Some members contend their job is now full-time, despite the salary that hasn't changed since 2002. Term-limited council member Lindsay Webb has stated she can make more in the private sector.
Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson has threatened to veto any pay raises, prompting conflict with the outgoing city council president who has called that threat election-year politics.
