Toledo City Council Pay Raises Debated

(Toledo, OH) Voting to give themselves a pay raise during an election year could be political suicide for members of Toledo city council.

But Tammy Mickolick of the salary review commission points out those same elected officials make a lot less than their colleagues in similar-sized cities and haven't seen a raise since 2002. That commission is recommending either a $3,000 or $11,000 raise for city council members, citing a comparison with other similar-sized cities which shows they're way underpaid.

That pay hike could be short-lived if the mayor makes good on her veto threat because of budget concerns.

Mickolick had some harsh words for the mayor's potential action during a public hearing Tuesday, calling it an “easy out” when she should instead be looking at longer-term budget adjustments.
