There's no word yet on how such a marriage would affect the Toledo Jeep assembly complex. But a deal between the two automakers would give Volkswagen a big presence in the U.S. and would give Fiat Chrysler needed cash to compete with other automakers in the future.
FCA is making huge investments in technology at several U.S. plants, including a planned retooling to make a next-generation Jeep Wrangler in Toledo. Speculation about the possible merger happened when Volkswagen's CEO commented Tuesday that he would not rule out talks with Fiat Chrysler.
