Ottawa Co. Quarry Work Halted by Court Order

(Benton Twp., OH) An Ottawa County judge orders work stopped at a former Benton Township quarry where spent lime from Toledo's water treatment plant is being buried.

The judge granted a preliminary injunction against the owner of the former Stoneco Quarry along state route 590. Ottawa County officials sued last month, claiming the operation was illegal because zoning regulations were being violated-- industrial-type work on land zoned agricultural. Quarry owners contend an Ohio EPA permit trumps any local zoning regulations.

Nearby residents are worried the project will contaminate drinking water supplies and adversely affect the entire watershed.
